Handlingen följer Takeshi Kovacs, en före detta soldat och söldnare som vaknar till liv efter att ha varit fryst i 250 år. Han återupplivs i en helt ny kropp för att lösa ett komplicerat mord. Som belöning för att klara uppgiften erbjuds han möjligheten att bli fri från sitt fängelsestraff. Kovacs måste navigera genom en framtidsvärld där medvetanden kan överföras mellan olika kroppar, så kallade "sleeves", vilket skapar både juridiska och moraliska dilemman.
